Clearing Browser History, Cache, and Cookies

Summary

These are steps on how to clear your web browser's history, cookies, and cache to troubleshoot issues with logging in to CWI web pages.

Body

About browser cache, cookies, and history:

Each time you access a website through your web browser, the browser caches (i.e., stores) it. Thus, the browser doesn't have to newly retrieve files (including any images on the page) from the remote web site each time you click Back or Forward. You should periodically clear the cache to allow your browser to function more efficiently.

About cookies and browser cache:

A cookie is usually created when you visit a site, for example http://my.cwi.edu. The browser writes data to the hard disk in your computer for various reasons. Often, the cookies do not get deleted when your browser closes. This can cause the browser to retain cached information such as login credentials. Then, when you login to a site and/or change your password on a particular site it attempts to use the cached password that is no longer valid. It is always a good practice to clear your browser history often.
